Most people agree, networks are important. Making connections makes you a better person and as 70% of jobs are found through networking, for a career changer, it’s a must! But, networking is not the exclusive realm of the job seeker. Businesses are made up of people. 1 billion dollars can be attributed to networking in the business world. I’m sold. I attend many networking events and have found some of my clients by doing so.
You’re not limited to just locally. We have a global reach through online mediums. LinkedIn & Facebook are two well-known social NETWORKING sites. Many of my clients, who are entrepreneurs, extol the virtues of this way of networking.I’m virtual and coach by phone or SKYPE so my networkin has people across the globe. I found my mentor, a web designer and a graphic artist-all through networking online.
But, does it really matter who is in your network? Yeah,it really does.
When asking various other career experts, instead of just my two cents, we all agreed networking, often now online e-networking, needs to be composed of many contacts. Here are the Top 5 types of people needed to round out your network! Consider both online as well as off-line contacts.
1.A subject matter expert in your field…At least one, but I say,the more the merrier!
2.A mentor-may be in your field. You also want to have a mentor in a different field entirely. One of my mentors is another coach but she does different things for her market. My other mentor is in Real Estate. I learn general business practices and he is a great “big brother” role model of a caring professional.
3 Make sure you have someone who seems to have all the news in the industry or business, in my case, in general. You want someone”in the know”.
4.Have someone in a higher position/income bracket than you. You always want to have something moving you forward and aspiring to be the best VP or 6 Figure entrepreneur…or whatever your goals may be.
5. Be a Mentor-have at least one person in an entry-level position or a budding entrepreneur. It’s a wonderful feeling to give back all your network has provided along the way. Now, it’s your turn!
