I had a coaching client yesterday, call and practice with me as one she needs to confront. This person owes her money for work my client discounted her normal rates for her.
Was she appreciative? No. Why not,you say? Well,it’s like this if you discount your rates, you have less perceived value. Will you do less than your best? Of course not.
But, will her ( my client) be valued less? Of course. People value what they pay for. The friend discount? Well, that’ s what it’s really worth..
Charging more just shows how my well- meaning client is now perceived.
Is it true? In the one who owes…yep. She doesn’t value my client’s services. My client writes web copy and has won an award for her writing! That just doesn’t make a difference.
That’s why it’s fee or free. No discounts. No,I’m not being callous , just realistic. ” I can’t afford it…really means I choose not to spend it on you. That’s cool. We always “find” it to pay for the hottest phone…gadget…video…and so it goes.
So,by all means, get paid the discounted amount. Now,you know, how not to have those difficult dialogues around money again.
