As I wrote yesterday’s part II post. I realized I wanted to break networking down further. All we’re talking today is about follow up techniques or put simply:what to do after a networking event? Here’s how I coach my clients on this. You have 3-25 business cards…the introverts have an easier time as they intentionally talked to fewer strangers. First, check if they are on LinkedIn. If so, remind them how they know you, thank them and ask to connect.
If not on that platform, try their email or Facebook. I sometimes will follow up that night! My coaching clients/teleclass attendees always ask me, “when should I follow up”? Give or take, 1-4 days…”What if I can’t follow up for a week or more,” you run the risk of being forgotten and awkwardly having to remind them.
I try to write down, on the card they gave me, something we talked about, family info, if I complimented her on her aqua scarf…So, when I follow up-I usually say how I know them…If email, in Subject line:Enjoyed meeting you at X event! Whatever method of contact, it’s a good idea to say where you met.
I talk extensively about follow up in my Networking is NOT a Dirty Word audios with workbook to test your knowledge. Right now, that web site is between hosts.
