Be Selfish!

Yes, I did say Be Selfish!  Huh?  Care only about me?  Not at all!

My coaching clients, whether they be baby boomer women searching for a lifestyle that fits or a career changer or solo-entrepreneur-all want work/life balance.  They want more time…for themselves.  But they often feel guilty for thinking of their needs…Here’s something I remind my clients about how important self-care can be!

You know the airline spiel about safety issues and they won’t take off til they show you the exits, flotation devices & what to do when oxygen masks come down?  Well, they tell you to put your own mask on BEFORE helping others!  In other words, be selfish!

Women, especially,  often take care of everyone else…and IF there’s any energy left, maybe a minute to catch a TV show, while cleaning up the kitchen, doing laundry or…

Not caring for yourself says a few things…"I’m not important enough-my needs don’t matter" & "Look how much I care & sacrifice!"

When we examine this "self-less" behavior, my women clients see their "martyrdom syndrome" can often lead to anger/resentment, frustration/sadness/depression, trouble sleeping & health issues.  Sometimes, we talk about the role model they’re being for their kids…grandchildren…

Selflessness is selfish.  Be selfish, instead.

I learned this the hard way.  I had a serious health issue & only could walk with the aid of a cane.  I had to let people help me-I really couldn’t run & get it, drive or even stand for more than 20 minutes!  I wanted to be the helper not the one needing help-I had to learn to be selfish!

I’d love to hear your opinions on this.

  1. I’m amazed, I must say. Rarely do I come across a blog that’s both equally educative and engaging, and let me tell you, you’ve hit
the nail on the head. The issue is something which too few folks are speaking intelligently about.

Now i’m very happy that I came across this during my search for something regarding this.
